Dr. Ghosh's research investigates cataclysmic events like coalescences of neutron stars and black holes. He works on the development of cyber-infrastructure for low-latency alerts of gravitational wave events, and is an original developer of the LIGO-Virgo collaboration's EM-Bright pipeline used for rapid gravitational wave source classification that debuted in the second observing run, and the co-developer of the current EM-Bright pipeline, which is used for real-time source-properties inference. He works on understanding the structure of neutron stars using gravitational waves from neutron star binary coalescences.
Dr. Ghosh teachs physics and astronomy courses in the undergraduate curricula of Montclair State University. He is especially keen on bringing in his expertise in computational techniques to teaching, giving undergraduate students an opportunity to learn these techniques early on, to prepare them for the future, in academia and in industry.
Dr. Shaon Ghosh is an astrophysicist working on gravitational wave data analysis. Gravitational waves (GW) are ripples in the fabric of space-time produced by dynamics of massive objects, and are able be detected from violent collisions of neutron stars and black holes using a multiple ground-based GW detectors called LIGO - Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory. GW carries with them information about these colliding systems that have previously been inaccessible.
Dr. Ghosh works at the junction of these two fields of gravitational wave and electromagnetic observations. He studies GW data obtained from LIGO, and analyze them to extract physics of the system. Dr. Ghosh collaborates with telescopes around the world to follow-up these systems to search for signatures of these events in the electromagnetic spectrum. He devises tools to combine the information from the GW and electromagnetic channels to maximize the scientific output of observations.
