Research interests

Professor Xi’s research interests include reliability and safety for energy storage systems, design for reliable energy systems, prognostics and health management for engineering systems, model validation under uncertainty, and system reliability analysis.

Professor Xi joined the Rutgers faculty in 2017. He is a member of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He currently serves as an Associate Editor for the journal of Energy Systems and is President-elect for Energy Systems Division in IISE. Professor Xi received his B.S. and M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering at University of Science and Technology Beijing, and obtained his Ph.D. in Reliability Engineering from the University of Maryland – College Park.

Areas of Expertise: Reliability engineering, lithium-ion battery, design for resilient systems, prognostics and health management, and model validation under uncertainty

Focus: Develop methodologies for uncertainty modeling, quantification and management in complex engineering products and systems design; develop innovative prognostics and health management algorithms for proactive maintenance of complex engineering products and systems; integrate theory with real applications for designing reliable energy storage systems, resilient microgrid systems, and reliable additive manufacturing products.

Federal and Industry Sponsors: Since 2014, Professor Xi’s research has been sponsored by National Science Foundation, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Department of Energy, and Ford Motor Company.
