Over the period we will collect environmental samples and analyze them for pesticide residues and assess the levels as to the potential risks to human and ecological health. There are two distinct phases of this work, the first is measuring metals and other environmental chemicals in fish tissue harvest by subsistence fisherman in the Raritan River in Central New Jersey, this is a common practice for low SES persons and the fish is an important protein contribution to their diet. The fish will be caught by local people and analyzed for metal and other environmental contaminants.Second is a study we are just starting to look at the environmental contaminants in breast milk of women living in the area near and adjacent to the Port of Elizabeth. Breast milk samples from new mothers will be analyzed for pesticides, perchlorate and other persistent environmental pollutants and an assessment and risk will be calculated to the mothers and to the neonates.
