For the past 8 years, USDA-ARS has provided financial support to IR-4 Headquarters (Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey), North Central regional office (Michigan State University), Southern regional office (University of Florida) and the Western regional office (University of California) to supplement the required travel expenses and salaries, wages and fringe benefit costs of Quality Assurance personnel. For the past 5 years USDA-ARS has provided support to the Rutgers Tree Fruit Research & Extension Center as an IR-4 Ornamental Horticulture Research Center conducts research to meet growers' needs for pest management tools. Due to a freezer malfunction at the ARS facility in Tifton, Georgia residue samples were lost creating the need for State field trials to be repeated. The Regional offices will be coordinating the repeat trials. Funding will be provided to Northeast regional office (Cornell University), Southern regional office (University of Florida) and the Western regional office (University of California). IR-4 has been working on the pesticide chemical, Diflubenzuron. The USDA-ARS Analytical Laboratory in Beltsville, MD has attempted to analyze this chemical on certain crops without success. A contract research facility in California is the only laboratory in the United States known to IR-4 as having success in extracting and analyzing diflubenzuron. This laboratory will extract and analyze the samples.
