The broad objective of this project is the investigation of convective storms and damaging wind events. Three studies are proposed and described, one involving convective storms, one involving the intense but poorly forecast nor'easter of March 2010, and one involving nor'easters more generally. Convective storms produce much of the annual precipitation in the midlatitudes and can cause loss of life and property damage; nor'easters affect society on a broader scale. The precipitation from convective storms and nor'easters has agricultural and hydrological implications. The convective storm study will distinguish between the atmospheric environments associated with severe convection vs. nonsevere convection in the Northeast US. This will lead to improved forecasts of severe weather. The nor'easter studies will lead to increased understanding of nor'easter dynamics and thermodynamics, ultimately leading to improved forecasts of nor'easters, better estimates of the uncertainty in those forecasts, and better understanding of their impacts on society.
