Abstract

We show that Pd2Te2(PEt3)4 (1) converts to Pd6Te6(PEt3)8 (2) on standing at room temperature in toluene, and that Ni9Te6(PEt3)8 (3) reacts with TePEt3 at room temperature in toluene to form Ni20Te18(PEt3)12 (4). We have shown previously that each of these molecular clusters can be isolated from reactions which, under more forcing reactions, give the corresponding solid state compounds, PdTe and NiTe. We have also shown that each of the clusters can be viewed as an isolated, passivated molecular fragment of the extended solid and for this reason the reactions which take the smaller clusters to the larger ones may be viewed as the molecular equivalents of solid state crystal growth reactions.
