A new method for the real-time determination of the number of atoms trapped and strongly coupled to an optical cavity was analyzed by monitoring the transmission of a weak probe beam. It was observed that the probe transmission exhibited sudden steps from one plateau to the next in response to the time evolution of the intercavity atom number. It was also observed that the atom number could be observed continuously in the strong coupling regime of the cavity. It was found that the resolution for a particular range of atom number could be enhanced by framing a few given values in the transition region.
