Development of decision-analysis computer tools for physicians

Abstract

Some possible approaches to the development of decision-analysis computer tools for clinical applications are discussed. The emphasis is on systems which facilitate physicians' understanding of the use of decision analysis techniques in protocol review and development. It is argued that by integrating the tools of decision analysis and linking them with protocol text, a computer tool can be developed which will aid in the development and maintenance of sound protocols, provide clinicians with a means to better understand why and when established protocols should be applied, help clinicians to keep their protocols in line with current medical literature, educate physicians about the benefits of decision analysis, and guide future medical research.
