Dry-mixing of sub-micron size B and BaCrO4 particles for use in T-10 delay composition

Abstract

The objective of this investigation is to improve the mixture homogeneity of Boron and Barium Chromate (a delay composition) using a novel dry mixing technique. The intent is to develop a new and environmentally friendly dry mixing process which produces an improved homogenous mixture while eliminating current downstream processing (drying) time associated with the wet chemistry processing/mixing methods used for T-10. Three different mixing methods were used, dry mixing (magnetically assisted impaction mixing, MAIM) and two wet mixing techniques using ultrasonic and shaker mixing mechanisms. The wet/solvent based mixing processes served as an investigative reference for the mixing effectiveness of the conventional solvent mixing processes used to mix T-10. The combination of the different mixing methods, coupled with prescribed mixing parameters and their associated processes, allow for comparative qualitative analysis of the homogeneity for the three resulting mixtures and the mixing effectiveness of the MAIM device. Characterization of the resulting Boron and Barium Chromate mixture were conducted using FE-SEM (field emission SEM) equipped with an EBS (electron back scatter) detector which provides higher Z contrast at extremely low accelerating voltage, resulting in higher spatial resolution, a 200 kV EF-TEM (energy filtering TEM) with EELS (electron energy loss spectroscopy), and other systems such as Particle Size Analyzer (LS-230). The results generated from imaging and particle size distribution analysis shows that the new MAIM techniques produces a mixture with a significantly improved homogeneity and has other enhanced handling and product performance features.
