Abstract

This paper examines the extent of inter-provincial disparities in Iran as of 1976 and 1984, indicates the dynamics of such disparities over the 1956-1976 and 1976-1984 periods, and classifies the provinces on the basis of their development levels. A variety of statistical techniques and measures are used which include coefficient of variation, standardised score, trends analysis and ranking. It is concluded that: 1) Iran is characterised by extreme inter-provincial disparities; 2) over the periods under analysis, such disparities narrowed, but not enough to change the place of provinces in the provincial hierarchy significantly; and 3) provinces could be classified into 3 categories of relatively-developed, intermediate, and least-developed provinces. The paper ends with some speculations concerning theoretical implications for 'inverted U' theory of regional growth and the theory of dual development and practical implications for the present government to redress provincial disparities.-from Authors
