Abstract
In order to evaluate the effect of heat generation at a crack tip during fracture of a glass on surface composition, the molecular dynamics computer simulation technique was used to determine the effect of temperature on the distribution of species at the newly created surface of K//2O. 3SiO//2 glass. The temperatures used here were approximately 350, 600, 900, and 1500 K. Results show that a rapid redistribution of K ions to the outer surface of the glass occurs and is enhanced by elevated temperatures.
