Abstract
After the successful completion of my dissertation defense, the only woman on my committee of four welcomed me to the " three percent. " She was referring to women with earned Ph.D. degrees. I was then reminded by my committee members that the percentage of Black women with earned doctorates was lower. In the midst of the joy I experienced in accomplishing this educational milestone, I was keenly aware of how my critical relationships with faculty guided my development as a college student and prepared me for success as a graduate student. Critical relationships with faculty were instrumental to my socialization into the profession.
