Abstract

The paper organizes the key known facts on the biogeochemistry of waste in coastal waters, at developing a conceptual framework for research and decision making. The properties of waste particles and their sedimentation in the water column are discussed. The major factors in determining the fate of metals and organic constituents in the chemical transformations associated with the change from the reduced waste environment to well-oxidized seawater.
