Interactional aspects of thematic progression in English casual conversation

Adopting the Functional Sentence Perspective, a framework developed by the Prague Linguistic Circle, particularly a model developed by Daneš (1974), this study analyzes casual conversation from the perspective of thematic progression. In this study concepts such as ‘theme’, ‘thematic-chunk’ and ‘thematic/rhematic/stray-turns’ as well as three basic models of interactional FSP are introduced in order to account for the interactional aspects of conversation. After analyzing Segments from casual conversation data based on these models, social implications of the Variation in thematic progression patterns and theoretical implications to the issue of oral/literate continuum are discussed.
