Abstract
Cardiac surgery requires continual monitoring of hemodynamics with complex monitoring systems. Extreme hemodynamic changes may occur during and after surgery in patients with significant cardiac comorbidities and circulatory instability. The primary goal of hemodynamic monitoring is to accurately assess the status of the cardiovascular system at any given point to ensure adequate end-organ perfusion and oxygen delivery. Vigilant monitoring, accurate interpretation of the data, coupled with early recognition of inadequate perfusion and then prompt intervention to titrate therapy to specific hemodynamic targets, ensure success. The selection and application of different monitoring modalities with accurate interpretation of the data acquired from invasive and noninvasive monitoring modalities are discussed in this chapter.
