Abstract

A simple experiment, which introduces students to the basic principles of drug delivery and chemical engineering, is described. The students perform an experiment which involves the release of a drug from a lozenge formulation, which is an example of a matrix-type drug delivery system. Students study the dissolution of a lozenge into water. Students observe visually the increasing dissolved drug concentration as reflected by the increasing color intensity of the water, and they are able to measure the drug concentration spectrophotometrically. They perform a material balance to determine the fraction of drug released and perform an experimental parameter evaluation.
