Abstract

In this chapter, estuaries and the fishes that inhabit these systems are briefly introduced. Background information on the 'triple whammy' of threats to estuaries and associated ichthyofauna is highlighted, and the value of increasing rehabilitation and restoration work being conducted in estuaries is favoured. A very brief summary of the main topics covered by each chapter in the book is given, and the importance of these issues to both scientists and managers involved in estuarine research and coastal management are emphasized. Finally, the usefulness to ichthyologists of the appendices on fish sampling gear and analytical methods for processing the collected data are also highlighted.
