Abstract
Developmentally and culturally responsive arts and arts integrated learning at the middle level must, at its core, seek to cultivate in young adolescents a desire for lifelong arts engagement. Cultivating a disposition toward lifelong engagement in the arts is critical during the transition stage of young adolescence when students are exploring multiple pathways for their future and, in some countries, have choices about which courses to take. While learning the discipline of a particular art form is important, only a small percentage of young adolescents will eventually become practicing artists. As a result, engaging and motivating those young adolescents less interested or less involved in arts and arts integrated learning should be the priority to both enrich students’ overall learning experience and to cultivate lifelong arts engagement. Drawing on the principles of middle level education and self-determination theory, this chapter outlines six important characteristics of middle level arts education centered on cultivating intrinsic motivation toward arts learning and a lifelong disposition toward arts engagement, and then outlines the sections in this volume, linking the chapters to the six characteristics.
