Lasers pumped by heavy ion beams

Abstract

Pulsed heavy ion beams are studied in an experimental program as a possible method to pump short wavelength lasers. Emission of light from matter excited by heavy ion beams is analysed with time resolved optical spectroscopy for that purpose. Accelerators used in these experiments can provide a beam power of about 50kW/cm2 in beam pulses of 2ns duration. A pumping power of the order of 40TW/cm2 will be available at the synchrotron SIS at GSI Darmstadt.
