Lattice fluctuations well above the spin-Peierls transition in the linear-chain system CuGeO3

Abstract

An electron-diffraction study of the linear-chain compound CuGeO3 reveals the presence of strong lattice fluctuations below ∼100 K, which is well above the spin-Peierls transition at 14 K. The lattice fluctuations are manifested in the form of diffuse scattering that has the shape of an infinite ribbon parallel to the chain direction. The intensity of the diffuse streak is found to rise rapidly below 100 K and saturate below 30 K. We propose that the diffuse streak is caused by scattering of low-frequency twisting vibrations of the CuO2 ribbons along the chain direction.
