Abstract

Alternate student development frameworks are needed to guide programs and services that more effectively assist racialized and minoritized students to successfully negotiate pathways to and through higher education. Alternative frameworks provide theory that guides practice designed to promote student learning and development, assisting all students to experience equitable and accessible opportunities to achieve academic excellence. Cultural capital and social capital networks are available and accessible to students, providing supports for negotiating pathways to and through higher education. Adopting an open systems approach to student development theory (SDT) considers the educational system as an integrated and dynamic entity. Early SDT and models offer a very limited scope typically based on development within a vacuum that is the college experience. Alternative SDTs and student development models appreciate the interrelationship among factors that create successful pathways for preparing students with the abilities, skills, and readiness for college access and success in a global workforce.
