Abstract

The book originated in the second national symposium of new crops, their exploration, research and commercialisation in Indianopolis, October 1991. The aim is to provide a review of the current status and future of new crop development in North America. There are three major sections, the first of which is on major policy directions in the US and abroad, with important US regional developments. Here, such issues as international conflicts in new crops policy, potential new speciality crops from Asia, genetic resources in Africa, publicly- and federally-sponsored development programmes and information exchange and research programmes for alternative plant and animal products. The central, core section is concerned with advances in research and development, exploring the progress being made in the search for new pharmaceutical crops, in domesticating useful plants from the Amazon, and in developing new forage grasses, Current work on crops is detailed. In the final section, an overview of new crop commercialisation is offered, beginning with the industry outlook from a seed company, the tomato processing industry, the pesticide industry, and the medicinal plant and pharmaceutical industry. Perspectives from large and small industrial companies, an industrial consulting company, as well as from Europe are presented. -after Publisher
