Abstract

We have observed the propagation of transverse sound in the two-dimensional electron solid in the domain of the phase diagram from the melting temperature T//m to about 1/3 T//m. Propagation velocities and damping have been measured. The shear modulus is seen to decrease linearly with temperature at low temperature and its value just prior to melting agrees with that derived from a model of melting by dislocation unpairing.
