Potassium-argon dates and stratigraphy of Pliocene volcanic domes near Mokelumne Hill, Calaveras County.

Research output: Contribution to journalArticle

Abstract

The K/Ar dates of hamby (3.73+ or -.29Ma), McSorely (3.76+ or -.06Ma), Jackson Butte (3.78+ or -.60Ma), and Tunnel Peak (4.12+ or -.09Ma) domes bracket the upper age limit of the Mehrten Formation between 4.1 and 3.7Ma. The date of Golden Gate Hill (4.73+ or -.16Ma) establishes the maximum age of the lowermost Mehrten Formation within the study area. The K/Ar dates obtained in this study are consistent with the field evidence documented by Rose (1949, 1959) and with his geological interpretations. -Author
