Abstract

The distortions of an initially flat front of tracer particles advected through a single fracture were analyzed using Lattice-Boltzmann (LB) numerical simulations. A self-affine surface was generated numerically using a Fourier synthesis method. The fracture pore space was taken as the region between one such surface and a suitable shifted replica. The two surfaces were separated by a fixed distance, in the direction normal to the mean plane of the fracture, and then a lateral shift of the upper surface was introduced. The results show that the upper cutoff of the self-affine regime grows with the lateral shift and linearly with the width of the front.
