Abstract

The method of using self organization to make 3D semiconductor photonic crystals operating at optical wavelengths is described. The method combines colloidal chemistry with two steps of hierarchical self assembly. The method is demonstrated by preparing 3D patterned bulk CdSe. Obtained refractive index contrast is sufficient to open a small, but complete, photonic bandgap at optical wavelengths, according to theory.
