Signal velocity, causality, and quantum noise in superluminal light pulse propagation

Abstract

A realistic definition of the velocity of the signal carried by a light pulse is presented. This velocity is analyzed for the recently demonstrated superluminal light impulse propagation. It is shown that while the pulse and the effective signal are both advanced via propagation at a group velocity higher than c, or even negative, the signal velocity is still bounded by c.
