Abstract
Approximate control techniques are introduced for vibration suppression of linear time-varying and nonlinear structural systems. The large number of degrees of freedom required to model structures makes it difficult to apply to them techniques developed for low-order nonlinear or time-varying systems. We consider in this paper three approaches that provide linear approximations for the time-varying or nonlinear terms in the equations of motion. The control design is based on the linearized model. It is shown that each approximation has its advantages and shortcomings, and that the type of approximation to use should be based on the objectives of the control, as well as the characteristics of the nonlinearity and the time-variance of the system.
