Abstract

Despite recent contentions, it is shown that, for the many known empirical quantities in 196Pt that can distinguish O(6) from U(5), the data overwhelmingly favor an O(6) description and are in substantial disagreement with the U(5) picture. The origins of the differences between the O(6) and U(5) predictions are discussed.
