The coadsorption of sodium and oxygen on Ag(100): an XPS, UPS and HREELS study

Abstract

The coadsorption of oxygen and sodium on the Ag(100) surface has been studied by UPS, XPS and HREELS. Pure sodium adlayers are found to be ionic at low coverages, and a work function decrease of 2.4 eV is measured at high coverage. Oxygen readily adsorbs on sodium-covered surfaces, and is accompanied by an increase in the work function of up to 0.8 eV. XPS data reveal the presence of at least two different oxygen species in the coadsorption system. HREELS results show that one of the states present at room temperature is molecularly adsorbed oxygen, as evidenced by the appearance of a loss peak at 77 meV.
